NEW BOOK AIMS TO BOOST DIETING PERFORMANCE
WITH DOSES OF HUMOR
SAN FRANCISCO –
According to the National Institutes of Health, nearly two-thirds of
U.S. adults are overweight while close to one-third are declared obese.
The fact that Americans spend over $33 billion annually on weight-loss
products and services indicates that they are actively searching for
solutions. With the abundance of diet books and weight-loss programs
currently on the market, one might wonder why the obesity epidemic is
growing rather than shrinking. Clearly, this is no laughing matter. Or
is it?
A newly released
book, Heavy Lettuce: Adventures of a Journeyman Dieter, by Johnny
T. Flynn, uses humor as a tool for exploring the absurd behaviors and
dysfunctional mindsets of ordinary dieters. In this book, Johnny
highlights his own imperfections, foibles, failures and disastrous plans
of action to help readers see themselves and their own actions in a
different and more humorous light. According to Johnny, “People relate
to ideas much better if they can see the humor in them. If dieters learn
to see what is comical in their own choices and actions, they gain a
higher level of awareness about themselves, and that makes all the
difference in the world when it comes to losing weight.”
Lightening up his own
view of himself and his problems helped him deal with the rigors of
dieting. He has lost over 50 pounds, and has now adjusted to life as a
thinner person. “I would probably gain all the weight back if I lost my
sense of humor,” says Johnny, “and I challenge myself, each day, to find
the humor in my mistakes and failures so that I will not repeat them.”
